Look Beyond the Waterfall on Your Falls Walk
The first view of Victoria Falls can quite reasonably take all your attention. But on the walk between viewpoints, give yourself a moment to notice the setting too: a leaf catching the light, layers of greenery beside the path, or a bird call you cannot yet put a name to.
You do not need to be a keen naturalist to enjoy this part of the visit. A little curiosity, and enough time to ask a question, can give your Falls walk another memorable dimension.
Bring one question for your guide
Wild Horizons describes its guided Falls tour as including information about the rainforest’s plants, birds and wildlife as well as the Falls themselves. If that side of the visit interests you, mention it when choosing your tour and again when you meet your guide.
Try a simple question: “What should we look for between the viewpoints?” Or ask about a plant you have noticed along the route. Let the guide respond to what is actually there that day; a particular bird or wildlife sighting should never be the condition for enjoying the walk.
Make a pause part of the experience
At a suitable stopping point, take a brief break from taking photographs. Look at the different shapes of the leaves, then listen. Ask your guide what they can identify and which details are easy for a first-time visitor to miss.
Keep to the designated route and follow your guide’s directions. There is no need to reach into the vegetation or leave the path for a closer look. If you want a photograph of a detail, ask where you can stop without holding up other visitors.
Give everyone a small discovery to remember
For companions with different interests, this can be an easy shared activity. Each person might choose one detail to remember alongside their favourite waterfall view: a texture, a sound, a guide’s explanation or a photograph of the greenery.
Keep it light. You are enjoying a holiday, not collecting a checklist of species. If photography is a particular interest, our story on enjoying photo stops together offers ways to keep the visit comfortable for everyone.
Leave enough time to be curious
Before booking, ask how much time the proposed tour allows in the rainforest and whether there is room for the interests you have described. Confirm the return arrangements before putting another fixed activity immediately after it.
A good Falls visit can hold both the grand view and the smaller discoveries along the way. Share your dates and what you would love to notice on your walk, and we can help you shape a Victoria Falls stay with time to enjoy both.
